I play on occasion and my most favorite games are nothing that goes with the hype of anything of any age. I play some Amiga games, some Mame enabled roms and I always loved strategy games like Age Of Empire.

I don’t own a machine that runs Windows so it was crucial for me to figure out how to run AoE over the mac.

I own a few copies of the game saga so today I decided to fire up Wine and install it from the CD-ROM. Up to the hour before this post, I didn’t know anything about Wine. In the quest to achieve what I wanted I learned a ton about it and I am here to share what I know now to benefit the future like-minded.

  1. Wine
  2. Winetricks
  3. WineSkins
  4. PlayOnMac

Wine (originally an acronym for “Wine Is Not an Emulator”) is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS, & BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.

Winetricks is a helper script to download and install various redistributable runtime libraries needed to run some programs in Wine. These may include replacements for components of Wine using closed source libraries

Make wrappers or ports of Windows software to Macs. Wine and custom Xquartz X11 all built in. Pre-built packages, or you can custom compile your own Wine source to use too. Finished products look and work like native Mac apps.

It’s a tool to make painless the installation of a Windows program. It is essentially based on all the things above wrapped in a friendly bow-tie

I tried several things to install Age of Mythology and nothing worked but the path that I describe below.

  1. Install all the above programs as one either fix some shortcomings of the others or simply makes things to go smoother
  2. Insert DISK1
  3. Right click on the setup.exe
  4. When the wizard asks what to do before the program (setup) is executed, select “install library”
  5. From the long list select Visual C++ Runtime 6. If you don’t do this, the library that checks if the serial number is correct won’t run and you will get a cryptic error message (can’t load pidgen.dll)
  6. After that, the installation proceeds as you would experience on Windows
  7. At some point, the setup will ask to switch disk two. Unfortunately, the main process is keeping the CDROM locked and it won’t let you eject the CD. Use a paperclip to force the CD/DVD ROM bay to open. After a few insisting clicks the setup will figure it out and work as expected

If you enjoy the spice up the gameplay using cheats, here is one of the many sites that offer those type goodies.

Happy fighting!
